THE DC HAMPTON PARENTS’ CLUB I. Purpose To encourage and assist Hampton University undergraduate students in
their pursuit II. Eligibility Criteria 1. Shall be continuing students who are in good standing at Hampton University.
2. Parents and/or guardians must be current members in the D.C. Hampton
Parents’ Club as of March of the current school year. Parents must
also be in good standing with the Club (i.e., they owe no outstanding
amounts to the Club for fundraisers, etc.) 3. Parents and/or guardians of the applicants must meet a minimal $200 requirement in support of the Club’s fundraising activities by the May monthly meeting. III. Type of Scholarship/Incentive Selection Criteria A. The Mrs. Evelyn Beam Scholarship shall be awarded annually to one eligible undergraduate student meeting the GPA requirements, unless there is a tie, then the amount will be divided equally among the awardees. The Evelyn Beam Scholarship honors students in the highest scholarship category with a minimum GPA of 3.8. To qualify, awardees are determined based on the highest GPA above the 3.8 minimum of the two current semesters, or the cumulative GPA, whichever is highest. Documents required for consideration include a completed scholarship application, 500-word essay, and an official Hampton University transcript. B. Merit Scholarship - Merit scholarship recipients shall be continuing students who are in good standing at Hampton University and who have at least a 3.0 or higher grade point average (GPA). Documents required for consideration include a completed scholarship application, 500-word essay, and an official Hampton University transcript. C. The Student Scholarship Award - The Student Scholarship Award recipients shall be continuing students who are in good standing, with a minimum GPA of 2.0, at Hampton University. Documents required for consideration include a completed scholarship application, recommendation, 500-word essay, and an official Hampton University transcript. At least one student Scholarship shall be awarded for each continuing classification level (sophomore, junior, senior). D. Incentive Award - Incentive Award recipients shall be a continuing student in good standing at Hampton University and who has shown the greatest improvement in their GPA (in the 2.0-2.9 category) from the previous year. The award is restricted to a student whose GPA standard falls between 2.0 and 2.9. Documents required for consideration include a completed scholarship application, recommendation, 500-word essay, and an official Hampton University transcript. One student Incentive Award shall be awarded. E. Helping Hands Award - The recipient shall be a continuing student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership or community service skills. The award is restricted to student(s) whose GPA falls at the 2.0 or above category. At least two Helping Hands awards shall be granted per year. Documents required for consideration include a completed scholarship application, 300-word essay that describes the student’s activities as a volunteer or leader and lessons learned by participating in that organization, and letter of recommendation from an officer or leader of the organization he/she was affiliated i.e., Leadership society, community organization, sorority or fraternity. F. Matthew Hopkins Award - The Matthew Hopkins Scholarship honors the life of Matthew F. Hopkins, a 2003 graduate of Hampton University, majoring in Marketing. The recipient shall be a continuing student(s) who are in good standing at Hampton University. This scholarship is open to all courses of study offered at Hampton University. The award is restricted to student(s) whose GPA falls at the 2.5 or above category. The scholarship will be granted to one student per year. Documents required for consideration include a completed scholarship application, 300-word essay that outlines the student thoughtful response to the essay question. A. Note to students: 1. Complete, sign, and submit the Parents’ Club Scholarship/Incentive Application Form. 2. Provide a Sealed Official copy of their Hampton University transcript as applicable. 3. Schedules permitting, written essay to be read by selected scholarship recipient(s) in attendance at The Parents’ Club Freshman Orientation Program. 4. Please refer to the checklist below for a quick review of the materials required by the Scholarship committee. Please refer to this Checklist as a guide for required documents

for the Helping Hand scholarship concerning community service;
Make the appropriate scholarship selections based on, grade point averages (GPA), essays, recommendations, and/or other required supporting documentation.
2. The amounts for each award--Merit, Student Scholarship, Incentive, and Helping Hands--shall be determined annually. As a rule, the following guidelines are provided: Mrs. Evelyn Beam Award - a minimum of $500, and is awarded Student Scholarship Award - $300 for each classification (Sophomore, Merit Scholarship Award - usually $300 each Incentive Award - usually $200 Helping Hands Award – usually $100 each Matthew Hopkins Scholarship Award – usually $700 to $900 VI. Other Scholarship/Financial Awards A. Book Scholarship This is a random drawing for members in good standing. The drawing will take place during regular Parents’ Club meetings (September through May); however, a member must be present to win the book scholarship. All students, including graduating seniors, are eligible. Families are limited to one book scholarship per year. B. Student Gift Packages This is an opportunity to provide individual gifts to all of our students. Gift packs could consist of small items such as cookies, mugs, cocoa, Wal-Mart coupons, and cards of encouragement. These items will be distributed during Parents Weekend or another appropriate time. C. Graduation Gifts We recognize the successes of our senior students by providing them with gifts upon graduation from Hampton. These gifts will be provided at the earliest opportunity after graduation.
